Background

A prerinse spray valve (PRSV) is used to rinse dishware prior to insertion into a mechanical dishwasher, usually in a commercial setting. PRSV water use is similar to a showerhead or faucet, and significant conservation potential exists through increased efficiency above 1.6 gallons per minute (gpm) for federal performance requirements.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), on July 10, 2009, released a WaterSense® notice of intent to develop draft “Performance Specifications for High-Efficiency Prerinse Spray Valves,” which cites 1.25 gpm as a potential target for a maximum PRSV flow rate. Florida Water Star Commercial and Institutional standards require the use of 1.25 gpm PRSVs.

Requirements and certification

Prerinse spray valves use 1.25 gallons per minute or less.
