The following general design practices should be implemented to ensure water use efficiency of an irrigation system:

High-volume irrigation
Microirrigation in landscape beds
Turf grass and landscape bed separation

Correct head/emitter location

Microirrigation in narrow areas
Sprinkler/emitter proximity to buildings

Leak and overspray prevention

Leaks
Leak detectors or flow sensors
Check valves
No permanent irrigation
